In 2004 California took the lead in adopting standards for compact audio products, which include only those integrated audio systems that have more than one of the following functions: radio tuner, tape player, CD player and MP3 player. These products typically have very high standby power consumption, which, due to their sheer numbers, amounts to several billion kWh of electricity wasted each year. The California standards, which have since been adopted by at least two other states, set a maximum standby power level of 2 watts for compact audio products without an illuminated clock display and 4 watts for products with an illuminated clock display. DOE is not currently required to set standards for these products.
There is no recent ASAP activity regarding audio products.
