Nearly identical to residential-style air conditioners and heat pumps, commercial 3-Phase central air conditioners are designed to operate on 3-phase power and are sometimes referred to as “packaged” units. In commercial settings they are typically designed to consume over 65,000 Btus, whereas in the residential market they typically consume less than 65,000 Btus. Residential market saturation of 3-phase central air conditioners is around 10%.
Update
In December 2007, the Congress enacted H.R. 6 requiring an increase in the efficiency of commercial 3-phase central air conditioners to a seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) of 13. The mandate sets the commercial AC standard equal to the residential standard for similar equipment. (February 2008)
