Congress enacted standards on ranges and ovens in 1987, effective 1990. The standard bans standing pilot lights in gas ranges and ovens that have an electrical supply cord. DOE began a rulemaking to revise this standard that is scheduled to be completed in March 2009 and take effect three years later. DOE is considering setting standards for microwave ovens as part of the rulemaking.
There is no recent ASAP activity regarding ranges and ovens.
