The federal Energy Policy Act of 2005 directs DOE to set standards for refrigerated vending machines.  The rulemaking is now underway and is scheduled for completion in August 2009.  To date, discussions are focusing on adoption of the tier 2 Energy Star specification as a mandatory standard. In the interim, California is enforcing a state standard based on the tier 1 Energy Star specification.
