Bottled water dispensers are commonly used in both homes and offices to store and dispense drinking water. “Hot and cold” water dispensers tend to be much less efficient than “cold only” dispensers because they must maintain water tanks at two temperatures in a small space. Adding insulation between the tanks and increasing existing insulation levels can reduce standby energy waste, cutting total consumption by 38%. Since 2004, five states have adopted EPA's ENERGY STAR performance criteria for “hot and cold” dispensers, which specifies maximum standby energy of 1.2 kWh per day. DOE is not currently required to set standards for these products.
There is no recent ASAP activity regarding water dispensers.
